Featured author for the Saturday, February 18, “An Author in Town” event will be Molly Lemmons. The program will begin at 3 p.m.

Often known as Miss MollyLouBelle with Tales to Tell, Molly Lemmons is not only an author, but a professional storyteller as well. She takes some of her stories from her first published book, Kind of Heart, a non-fiction collection of stories about growing up in Oklahoma City during the 1950's.

Her stories are geared to touch your heart with humor, nostalgia and inspiration, encouraging both readers and listeners to celebrate families, relationships and God. She has been published in Chicken Soup for the Soul several times, Christian Chronicle, Christian Woman, Ideals Magazine, Heavenly Patchwork, and Christian Journal. Her stories have also run in newspapers in Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas.

She teaches workshops on Writing and Telling Life's Memories (from the heart) and travels wherever she is called to tell her stories, or teach her writing classes. A member of Territory Tellers and a member of National Storytelling Network, she is also a member of Christian Storytelling Network, Oklahoma City Writers, Inc. Inspirational Women's Network, Oklahoma Federation of Writers, Inc. and Oklahoma Association of Storytellers, and Oklahoma Presenters and Performers. In 2011, she was first runner up in the Mrs. Senior Oklahoma competition.

Her other books are The Passing of Paradise, a fictional inspirational romance, and As Bright and as Pure as the Driven Snow, a series of lessons designed for the teen aged girl on God's plan for sexual purity before marriage. The lessons conclude with study sheets and work pages, and her fourth book, Seize the Flashbacks, is a how-to book on writing memories from the heart. Hold My Hand, My Precious Child, her fifth book, is a gift book about role reversals as we age, and is dedicated to mothers everywhere, but most especially to her own beloved mother. We are Invisible, her sixth book, is a non fictional account of the heart- rending emotions that a woman goes through in caring for an aged parent.

An alumna of Oklahoma Christian University, she is mother to two and "GrandMolly" to two. She lives in Mustang, OK with her husband of 53 years and her dog and three cats.

Molly Lemmons is an experienced author whose skill as a storyteller enhances her writing to produce stories that entertain, touch the heart, and bring a chuckle. Her books include: We Are Invisible, Kind of Heart, Seize the Flashback, Pure as the Driven Snow, and Passing of Paradise.

Her stories will tug at your heartstrings and encourage you to celebrate God, families, and life.

One of her most popular titles has been Kind of Heart and is a book compiled from the columns she wrote for the Mustang News for three years. Molly's stories have been published in Chicken Soup for The Mother's Soul, Christian Woman, Christian Chronicle, Christian Journal, Ideals Magazine. She was also published in Chicken Soup for the Kids' Soul 2, and Heavenly Patchwork. Her stories have also appeared online in Heartcatchers, Write2theHeart, and Heartwarmers, as well as newspapers in Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma.

TYPES OF WRITING IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Some general definitions, tips, and helps for writing assignments.

Compiled by M.A. Hudson, 2011

The following is a list of commonly used terms found in course syllabi and writing assignments.

Informal:

Paragraph – A paragraph is commonly considered to be from 3 to 10 sentences (number above 3 may vary depending on content and writing style).

Letter – a formal or casual communication to a friend, business or other entity including a salutation, introduction, body, conclusion, and signature.

E-mail – an electronic form of a letter entity including a salutation, introduction, body, conclusion, and signature.

Bibliography – A list of all sources used in the preparation of a paper, a research project, or information search.

Arachniography -An arachinography provides a reference list of URLs collected on a specific subject or topic. The term has been coined by NASA research historian Andrew J. Butrica.

Annotated bibliography – A properly formatted bibliographic citation for a resource followed by 2-3 paragraphs describing the content and focus of a book or article, including how the work might be used to help in the creation of another project such as a research paper or thesis.

Web logs – a mini essay containing a beginning, middle, and an end.

Postings – A polite mini-posting of opinion, questions, challenges and information to a forum or discussion board.

Essay – the essay may be 1 page to 10 pages and be (1) persuasive, (2) compare-contrast, or (3) informative. A common early form is the “Five Paragraph Essay”: an Introduction (with thesis statement), first argument/support, second argument/support, third argument/support and a conclusion or summary.

Response - 2-3 paragraphs in which the writer responds with their views, opinions, alternate evidences, etc. to a piece of writing (such as an article, speech, website, etc.)

Report - A problem paper "reporting" on a theme or topic which includes informational data or views and may be from 5 to 20 pages in length. Sometimes used interchangeably with -

Paper (1-5 pages - but may be longer) - A more formal piece of writing, similar to both the essay and the report which looks at a question, problem or issue and presents possible answers or positions.

Formal:

Research Paper (5+ pages) – A serious paper in strict MLA (or other specified format), which includes a cover sheet, content, footnotes or endnotes, and a bibliography of sources consulted and used.

Thesis (25+) – A upper level work, usually in senior or master’s level courses, with specific parts following a required format (such as MLA, APA, or Turabian). It will address a specific problem in some fields. In some fields or degrees it will be a report off a field research project seeking to answer a hypothesis or question. The part of this work include: Introduction, background information of the topic, Statement of the Problem, Review of the Literature (What others have said), Research problem or statement (What steps you suggest to provide answers to a problem) , What Steps Were Taken To Solve the Problem (report of field work), Conclusion and summary.

Dissertation (100+) – A work undertaken at the doctoral level which includes reference to the work of others but is primarily the original research and study conducted by the student. It will address a specific problem in some fields. In some fields or degrees it will be a report off a field research project seeking to answer a hypothesis or question. The part of this work include: Introduction, background information of the topic, Statement of the Problem, Review of the Literature (What others have said), Research problem or statement of issue (What steps you suggest to provide answers to a problem) , What Steps Were Taken To Solve the Problem (report of field work), Conclusion and summary. It will include an abstract, copies of surveys, documents used, and an extensive bibliography (usually a minimum of 50 resources).

A Word on Writing Better Papers:

Regurgitation Writing - Avoid the temptation to simply write the history of your subject or topic. Some history or background may be important to the understanding for the people who read your work but when it begins to sound like an encyclopedia entry it is time to stop. Avoid the tendency to simply parrot back everything your instructor or textbook said.

Ask What Does This Mean? – To avoid the above look at your subject and the information gathered to ask ‘so what does this all mean?’ How does this impact my life, my work, my field? Has this given me something to become more wise, aware, intelligent, informed, and capable? Does it provide me with understanding of underlying themes, influences, and consequences which explain my world and the events in it? What might happen to me, society, and the world if specific events, ideas, or methods continue without correction or improvement?

First Drafts – A writing project is always a process. This means your will write a first draft. This will be followed by a rewrite and perhaps additional material. You may rearrange material. The work will be checked, polished, and only turned in when it is the best work possible.

Formatting Papers:

Name (Heading)– Your name should be placed in the upper left hand corner of the first page, followed on the next line by your course name and number, and then under that the date. EVERY work should have this information on it to insure proper credit. Do not get this heading and the ‘header field’ (see below) confused.

Font – A standard font is one which is common to all systems and easy to read. Type fonts which meet this criteria include the following: Times New Roman and Tahoma. Standard size of the fonts for most work is considered to be a 12 pt. font.

Margins – Most word processing programs come with standard default margins of about 1 to 1.5 inches. If you are required to use the strict requirements of a particular formatting style (MLA, APA, etc.) follow those requirements closely.

Headers/Footers – Many word processing programs have an insert function allowing the user to add page numbers, last names, etc. In Microsoft Word, for instance, going to “insert” allows selection of page numbers which can be added to the bottom or the top of a page, center, left, or right side of the page. To insure your name and a page number are on each page of a larger project, use this feature to insert a page number. Simply insert the page number, type your name in the ‘header field’ which emerges and click elsewhere on the page to close the ‘header field’. Do not get the ‘heading’ and the ‘header field’ confused.

Cover Sheets – These are usually only required in the more formal research, thesis, and dissertation projects.

'THE ROLE OF THE LIBRARY WITH LITERATURE'

Southwestern, since 1950 when first president Dr. R.O. Corvin authored David and His Mighty Men (Eerdmans, 1950), has had authors associated with the school. Margaret Muse Oden, author of Steps to the Sun and editor of several denominational publications, served as instructor of piano and organ in the early 1950's. Over the years many faculty added works to this list. In recent years, Dr. Chuck Chitwood published The Trial of Job (Chariot Victor, 2000), Dr. Garnet Pike Receiving the Promise of the Father (LifeSpring, 2000), Dr. Terry Tramel Beauty of the Balance (LifeSpring, 2009).

In celebration of this heritage, to fulfil the strategic plan of the library department and contribute to the goal of the university to connect the campus with the community, the SCU Library will sponsor a spring series called, "An Author in Town". These events will be book signing, readings, and sales featuring one or more authors. They will be open to the public and will encourage author-reader connections.

Anyone interested in gaining additional skills in literature, creative writing, or English language, contact the Language Arts Department in the School of Arts and Science about upcoming classes and degree options.

A spring series of events are planned at the library on the Bethany campus. These are designed to connect the campus to the community by bringing readers and authors together.

The first event will be Sat. Jan. 28, 2012 from 3-4 p.m. in the library. Author Cullan Hudson will be signing copies of his books.

The number one tourist destination in the library was the bank of new compacting shelves. They were a great temptation...we only lost one or two students this way. We think we might find one later....we suspect he is emulating the 'Flat Stanley' book and being mailed around the country seeing the sights. Southwestern Christian University will be holding their annual Cultural Dinner on Thursday, April 21st at 7 p.m. in the Patrick Cafeteria.

The dinner was started over 20 years ago by SCU’s beloved professor Charlotte Iaquinta and has continued on as an SCU tradition ever since. Initially started as a requirement for Mrs. Iaquinta’s Human Diversity class, students were required to bring a dish that best reflected their cultural background.

The dinner is now an event open to whoever wishes to participate where guests are asked to bring a labeled food dish that best represents the culture they came from. It identifies 'public information' and shows how students and schools can safeguard access to other information.

Academic Advising: A Comprehensive Handbook is a publication of the National Academic Advising Association. It will allow faculty who advise students to gain skills, insights, and gather ideas for improving their advising services to students.

In this time period there are fun activities but also important tests, try-outs, and orientations to jump start your success in your academic programs. SCU'S HISTORIC ROLE IN THE IPHC CENTENNIAL

On March 30, 2011, the IPHC continued its centennial celebration on the campus of SCU in Bethany, Oklahoma. Three of the individuals whose commentary were part of the video presentations have roots with the school. Authors and Historians all they communicated the past clearly: Dr. Chuck Chitwood, Registrar of Southern Nazarene University and past Academic Dean of SCU; Marilyn A. Hudson, Director of Library Services at Southwestern Christian University, and Dr. Vinson Synan, one time faculty and interim president of Southwestern Christian University. In addition, Dr. Terry Tramel, Dean of the Graduate School of SCU, authored the historical document on the 1911 merger that was used in the booklet distributed to all attendees.

In April 2011 (18-20) a visiting team from North Central Association for Colleges and Schools, Higher Learning Commission, will visit the campus as part of the institutional self-study. Successful completion of the process will include a re-accreditation of the university as an institution of higher education. SCU has taken this process very seriously; a committee was formed to steer the process. Members were Professor Kirk Jackson, chair; Dr. Jeff Keeney; Professor Shelley Groves, Professor Ken Young, Professor John Chasteen, Professor Marilyn A. Hudson, Dr. Reggies Wenyika. They were assisted by numerous staff, supporters, and community members.

Recently, another all staff and faculty meeting was held to inform staff about the upcoming visit, answer questions, and encourage people to review the report online.

The university attempted to involve as many groups and communities as possible in their self-examination. The seriously examined where they have been, what they have been doing, and where they want to be. Emerging is an exciting new emphasis on assessment, strategic planning, mission driven development, and best practices in higher education. Preserved and strengthened is a commitment to be a "Christ centered Christian Liberal arts university" developing students where faith, learning and living are dynamically integrated.

The facility just west of the school is the headquarters of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church. Before it assumed that role the building and grounds were an orphanage and elder care institution. St. Joseph's was opened in October of 1912 and as can be seen in the image, it was a little rural in the area back then.

Noel Brooks: A Life Shining and Burning is the title of an upcoming book Marilyn A. Hudson is writing looking at the life and contributions of British Pentecostal scholar, the Rev. Noel Brooks (1914-2006). Hudson, who is currently serving as the Director of Library Services at Southwestern Christian University, Bethany, Oklahoma says publication is set for early Fall 2011. "It is hoped that a formal book release event can be planned in conjunction with the annual alumni and friends events in early November." Brooks, who in the 1970's taught on the previous SCU campus on NW 10th Street in Oklahoma, donated book and papers to the SCU Library prior to his death. Since the late 1960's the library has featured a collection of books and resources related to the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. "We are now aggressively planning to expand this resource into a strong research site for central Oklahoma," noted Hudson, adding, "with the donation of the original materials the dream was to someday build a new library and name it the Noel Brooks Memorial Library."

Hudson, who holds degrees in History and Library and Information, has previously written One Nightclub and a Mule Barn: 60 Years of Southwestern Christian University (Tate, 2005), In Her Own Words: The Life and Inspirational Poetry of Velma Terry, 1912-1999 (WhorlBooks, 2010), juvenile and training works, and short story collections.

Dr. Terry Tramel, Dean of the Southwestern Christian University School of Graduate Ministry, addressed the 'Empowered Conference' in 2010 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His address on "Pentecostalism in the 21st Century in Light of the Wesleyan Quadrilateral" has been included in the newly published book, Spirit-Empowered Christianity in the 21st Century (Charisma, 2011) edited by world renowned Pentecostal historian and scholar. Dr. Vinson Synan.

About the book:

What does a re-vision of the Charismatic/Pentecostal Spirit-empowered movement look like in the coming years of this millennium? The first century of this revival seems to attest that the Lord raised up the holiness and Pentecostal movements not only to be custodians of these distinctive truths, but the perpetuators of them as well. If any generation ceases to accentuate this emphasis, the movement likely will forfeit the right to be recognized as such.

When the Pentecostal message is preached, published, and proclaimed through triumphant song, an atmosphere is sustained for people to experience anew and again the reality of salvation, holiness, charismata, wholeness, and hope. Such a revival will be biblically based, rationally sound, traditionally accurate, and experientially real.

Spirit-Empowered Christianity in the 21st Century is an authoritative compilation of the presentations from thirty leaders in the Charismatic/Pentecostal movement given at the Empowered 21 Conference in Tulsa, OK, in April 2010. These chapters share emerging insights on how the next generation will handle the profound issues facing Christians within the Charismatic/Pentecostal movement in the 21st century. Marilyn A. Hudson, Director of Library Services, has been honored to be nominated and invited to share a story during the annual Texas Storytelling Festival in Denton, Texas in March. Hudson, whose professional training and background includes library services to children and teens, has been a professional storyteller for over twelve years.

"Storytelling is not just for children, " Hudson noted. "Stories are being rediscovered by all disciplines as an effective means of communicating in a way that engages the senses and stimulates the mind. From board rooms, classrooms, pulpits, to hospitals - the power of story is having an impact."

She has been sharing stories with all ages around the state during the summers at public libraries, in community theater programs, at various state events, Tellabrations (annual storytelling event), historic locations such as the Overholser Mansion, and conferences. She is a past board member of the state story organization, The Territory Tellers, and current facilitator of the Oklahoma Storytelling Association. Hudson holds a bachelors degree in history and master's degree in library and information studies from the University of Oklahoma.

Due to an impending snowstorm with 6-10 inches of accumulation, the Centennial West Celebration, a special event celebrating the 100 years of the sponsoring institution, is postponed. The new event will take place Wednesday, March 30 at Southwestern Christian University.

The original Centennial Celebration took place January 30 - February 1 in Falcon, North Carolina. Over 2,000 people turned out for the event, which included a covenant signing and communion service. People left blessed and inspired!

The following is the introduction given by Jon Chasteen to the recipient of the Alumnus of the Year for 2010:

Dwight Burchett.....
The recipient of the 2010 Southwestern Christian University Alumnus of the Year Award has served 41 years in the ministry, 40 of which have been at Life Christian Center. He led a congregation of 60 in attendance to a phenomenal growth of 1,500 members during his pastorate.

Under his leadership the congregation dedicated a 77,000 square foot facility on 65 acres at I-240 and South Anderson Road in Oklahoma City on September 22, 1985. He founded Life Christian Academy and the Life Community Sports Complex. He and his wife, Mary, owned and operated a Wedding Chapel and a day care at another facility as well. He has served the ministry as well as the community in a number of ways by investing his life and making numerous contributions to the people of this area.

It is his belief that the family is the first and greatest institution established by God. He feels that he was called by God to team with families to develop excellence in every area of the home and all things done at Life Christian Ministries were done with the family in mind.

He was also on television for three years with a one hour recorded program of the weekly services, as well as a local one-minute radio spot titled “A Day In Your Life.” He has ministered internationally to such countries as Russia, Kenya, South Africa, Honduras, Philippines, Haiti, and Mexico. The influence that he has had with pastors in conferences has had lasting results through encouragement and day to day practical applications of ministry.

He has now transitioned from Lead Pastor to a lesser role with his son, Shon, who has become Lead Pastor. This significant shift has opened new venues of opportunity in the area of seminar lectures, leadership conferences, and pastor counseling.

He attended Southwestern both as a high school student and college student, graduating from the college in May of 1962 with a Bachelors degree in Theology. He also has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree and has taken graduate studies in speech and psychology. In addition, he graduated this past May with his Master of Ministry degree from Southwestern Christian University.

His love and dedication to Southwestern has been seen for decades. Since his attending in 1962, he has always been involved and connected to Southwestern. He served on the SCU Board of Regents for over 17 years and then, in 2009, perhaps showing his greatest display of love for his alma mater, he served as interim
president.

EMMA CROUCH VISITS CAMPUS

Emma Crouch graduated from Southwestern Pentecostal Holiness College in Oklahoma City and went to Canada in 1964 where she was on the faculty of the Foothills Bible Institute in Winfield, Alberta. She was an ordained minister with the Pentecostal Holiness Church of Canada. She was on staff at Foothills for eleven years and for the last three (1973-1975) served as the Institute’s president. When Foothills and Christianview Bible College combined in 1975, she went to the newly relocated Christianview Bible College as a faculty member as well.

Her focus was Christian Education teaching Theology, Sunday School Organization, VBS, Youth Leadership. She also served as the General Christian Education President for the PHCC, and a field consultant for Scripture Press of Canada. She was a member of the General Board of Administration for the PHCC.

Writing in 1978 in the Christianview Bible College annual she expressed her desire for all the current and potential students: "May I challenge you to take advantage of your schooling as Mary sat Jesus' feet. As you sit here, God desires to pour out his abundance on you. He desires to open your mind to receive the treasures of the truth."

Volumes from her personal library have recently added to the collection of Southwestern Christian University, especially in the areas of pyschology, philosophy, and Pentecostalism.

Emma Crouch may be one of the earliest women in leadership in an educational institution related to North American Pentecostalism.

SCU PROFESSOR ADRIAN HINKLE PUBLISHES JOURNAL REVIEW

BETHANY – During this time of the school year, many university professors are consumed organizing learning objectives, preparing class syllabi, and attempting to accommodate students not yet accustomed to their classes. Professor Adrian Hinkle, the department chair of the School of Theology and Missions at Southwestern Christian University, took the time out of her busy schedule to publish her second journal review in the fall of 2010.

Adrian Hinkle graduated with an M.A. in Theology from Southern Nazarene University and is currently in pursuit of a Ph. D. from the University of Wales. Hinkle has had one journal review published in The Pneuma Review in the winter of 2009. It is during her candidacy for her doctorate that Hinkle thought up the idea and took advantage of the opportunity to compose her second journal publication.
While preparing to write her thesis, Adrian Hinkle stumbled upon Dale B. Martin’s Pedagogy of the Bible: An Analysis and Proposal. Throughout her readings, Hinkle found more and more things that she and the author did not agree on, resulting in her decision to undertake a journal review over the book.

The review has been published in this year’s edition the Journal of Biblical and Pneumatological Research (JBPR), edited by Paul Elbert. The publication is produced once a year in the fall and is a compilation of printing reviews and articles on theological and pneumatological interpretation, religious experience in various contexts, and the role of the Holy Spirit. The review will be published alongside works by some of Hinkle’s favorite theologians, including Walter Brueggermann.

“It is encouraging to see other theologians from the Pentecostal tradition continue to surface and strive to bridge the gap to serve God in both spirit and truth, rather than merely embracing one or the other.” said Hinkle.

Southwestern Christian University, Bethany, Oklahoma will be offering a beginning storytelling course in a weekend module for Spring 2011.

The course is LIS/SPCH 2642 Storytelling: Techniques and Methods to be offered Friday March 4 and Saturday March 5 from 8:30 to 4:30.

The two hour credit course is "designed to introduce the history, values, methods, and applications of the art of oral storytelling with audiences of diverse ages, settings, and purpose. Storytelling is used in education, religion, business, communication, health care, and youth services." Prerequisite: Introduction to Speech Communication (or equivalent).

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY I.E. 'CHEATING' and 'THEFT'

Is seems so easy....in a hurry, paper due, cut and paste....

Academic dishonesty, cheating, or plaigairism - call it what you will, the end result is a serious violation of the integrity expected in students. This form of intellectual theft is a growing problem, based possibly on the increasing loss of ethics in our culture, the 'tyranny of the urgent', and our own lack of foresight or time mangement.

SCU, like other schools, does not allow such actions. As the academic catalog clearly states:

Academic Integrity
Personal integrity is presumed to be sufficient assurance that a student completes his/her own work without unauthorized help from any other source. Students who are involved in forms of academic dishonesty are subject to the jurisdiction of the Dean of Academic Affairs. A student who violates the Academic Honor Code may forfeit the privilege of continuing his/her studies at SCU.
The honor principle of the campus depends on the willingness of students, individually and collectively, to maintain and perpetuate standards of academic honesty. Each student accepts the responsibility of not only being honorable in his/her own academic affairs but also supporting the principle of honesty as it applies to others.
Students are responsible for obtaining from their instructors an explanation of the freedom they may exercise in collaborating with other students or using outside sources, including the student‟s own work prepared and submitted for another course. If a student does not obtain a clear definition of the application of the Honor Code, the student must assume that the Dean of Academic Affairs and appellate bodies will follow the strictest interpretation of the Honor Code with respect to that class.
Honesty and integrity in the performance of academic assignments is expected of every student.

ACADEMIC HONOR CODE

The following are included as violations of the Honor Code:
1. Cheating on an exercise, test, problem or examination. Cheating includes the use of unauthorized aids, such as crib sheets, digital tools, the aid of another instructor on a take-home exam; copying from another student‟s work; soliciting, giving and/or receiving unauthorized aid orally or in writing (before, during or after the quiz/examination), in such a way as to gain or give an advantage over other students; or any similar action contrary to the principles of academic honesty.
2. Plagiarism on an assigned paper, theme, report or other material submitted to meet course requirements. Plagiarism is defined as incorporating into one‟s own work the work of another without properly indicating that source. Included, but not limited to, are infractions of submitting for credit papers or reports written by someone other than the student, providing such a paper to a student, and failure to indicate the source of ideas, expressions, phrases or sentences (lack of citations). This also includes the use of commercially prepared papers or texts.
3. Non-reporting of suspected violations of the Honor Code.
4. Actions designed to deceive a member of the faculty or a fellow student regarding principles contained in the Honor Code, such as securing assistance from a faculty member in another course when such assistance has been unauthorized.
5. Double Submissions of Work, prepared for another course, without specific prior authorization of the instructors in BOTH courses.
6. Falsification of results of study and research. Presenting material that is known to be false and/or fabricated.
7. Infringing upon the right of others to fair and equal access to the library and classroom resources. Failure to sign for material and equipment taken from the library, classrooms and/or other college depositories of information and equipment. Abuse of library privileges by defacing resources, failing to check out materials, or return materials in a timely fashion.
8. Actions or statements showing disrespect, contempt, or insolence for the institution‟s educational philosophy, Mission, faculty, or administration.

Appeals of a decision by the Academic Dean regarding violations of the academic Honor Code shall be filed with the Academic Dean within 48 hours of receiving written notification of the case decision. The appeal must be in writing and shall state whether a) new information is to be presented or b) if the severity of the penalty is being appealed. Either the student or faculty member involved may appeal the decision. The appeal shall be heard by the Academic Council. If a majority of the appellate body is directly involved in the case, then the appeal shall be heard by the full-time faculty and those individuals who are full-time employees of the University and hold faculty status. Either party, including the Academic Dean, may appeal the decision of the appellate body. The appeal will then be heard by the Administrative Committee. All decisions of the Administrative Committee shall be binding and final. Penalties for violation of the Honor Code may include, but not be limited to, suspension and/or dismissal from the institution.

2. Details about "fair use" (that copying and/or use which is allowed by federal law) will be made available to all instructors, students, or administrators as requested or needed. The director or dean of a campuses library and its many services is often mistakenly called a "librarian" but the correct title is "Director" and in some schools, "Dean."

What is the difference? we asked: "Although the ideal is a formally trained and education individual with a degree from an ALA approved school, a librarian can be anyone who works in a library regardless of experience, training, or office. That is often the public preception and an actual fact because librarians, associate librarians, assistant librarians and library assistants may all help people but their training for the job may be more 'on the job', especially in smaller libraries."

What makes a Director different?: "A Director, or Dean, acts more administratively and makes plans, develops, submits, and oversees a budget, trains and schedules staff, develops and implements policies, meets with upper administation in managing, planning, and training; represents the library across the campus in administrative meetings, participates in administrative committees and campus work, and has direct oversight of the operations of the library. Generally, such a person also has education, training and/or experience lending itself to a more supervisory role. The person in this administrative/faculty classed position reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

A librarian generally is seen as being one who works under directions, and although they may have oversight of a program or activity has no input into the budget, makes no policies, and answers to the Library Director or Dean.

New Meaning for Library Emerged in 20th Century

The meaning of the word 'library' was originally book focused. Libraries were places were books lived. In the early 1960's with the appearance of new technologies an over emphasis developed on the format of information. Books were kept in one place. Computers, visual-auditory tools and other items were segregated by their format. They were viewed as informational cats and dogs and the intermingling of them sure to result in total societal chaos.

Then some thinkers came along and asked some good questions. "Why are we dividing them by format?" "Isn't that film filled with as much information as that book or magazine?" "We are putting books on film now - so why the need to keep them divided by format."

The library world met. They decided that information was information and only QUALITY not format should ever matter.

So today when the word "LIBRARY" is used it has been expanded to mean
a variety of formats brought together for access, use, and preservation for a common need (i.e. information). Today's modern library is commmitted to finding quality resources. The focus is on how current, useful, and balanced is the resource. Does the resource deliver what it promises? For this reason, even databases and online resources are critiqued in the same manner print materials are to guarantee quality information.

BETHANY - Coach...isn't that a word with association to athletics? Not anymore according to the Harvard Business Review. In the HBR report, it was noted that the number of people entering the life coaching field has skyrocketed over the last decade with estimates of over 20,000 practitioners in the corporate world alone. The International Coach Federation (ICF) reports that life coaching has now become the second fastest growing profession in the world, rivaled only by Information Technology.

What is life coaching? According to Tony Stoltzfus, well known author and life coach, "it is the art of coming alongside a leader to help him or her grow. Coaches are change experts who help leaders take responsibility to act and maximize their own potential."

To address the need for qualified practitioners in this field, Southwestern Christian University in Bethany has announced the establishment of a new SCU LifeCoaching Institute, to be directed by nationally recognized life coach and trainer, John Chasteen (www.heycoachjohn.com). "We believe that life coaching is a niche for the university that will place us on the cutting edge of leadership development in the Midwest", said Chasteen. "Christian higher education must begin to think more creatively in order to reach an ever-changing world and its demands. This is something we are striving for at SCU." Chasteen went on to quote John F. Kennedy when he stated, "Change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future." Under the auspices of the SCU Graduate School, the SCU LifeCoaching Institute will offer a Christ-centered graduate degree along with a certification track for those entering into the life coaching arena.

This year in the University Library was amazing. As always, the thrill of commencement and seeing people happy to reach their goal and see a dream come true. This year the added zest of an inauguration.

The Report from the University Library is good and here are some of the reasons why:

Circulation continues its four and a half year upward swing.

Gate counts continue to grow as more and more students come to read and study

Computer Lab use continues at its high and unabated rate - despite wireless access on campus

Database access continues to grow

Consultations with Library Director for homework, research, instruction, and similar needs reached an all time high! These included walkins, appointments, email, mail, and phone requests from students and research guests.

Reference questions rose as more and more students and faculty recognize the value of their campus library.

New resources, targeted to the growing curriculum, continues to see interest and use of the library among faculty, staff, and guests

Highlights of 2009-2010:

"First ever" Academic Orientation component to week of welcome set the tone for academic achievement by students

"Red Dots" came to the library identifying places students could plug in laptops to save battery use. All students had to do was look for the red dots on tables scattered through the library.

The new web page for the university includes many resources, helps, information for the serious or inquiring student: links to databases, Moodle, handouts, book lists, policies, basic information, forms for recommending items, forms for instructor course reserves, etc.

The addition of the NEWS CENTER in the library enriched the learning and cultural awareness greatly. For the first time students could catch first hand news, business reports, and other items carried on cable news in the library. Classes could reserve the library and news center to watch cultural programs (concerts, plays, documentaries, etc.) or see political events (elections, press conferences, speeches, etc.). Throughout the week and the day various cable news programs played allowing students to develop cultural awareness of current events, evaluate issues of media literacy, and hone higher critical thinking skills.

"Tell It Again!: A Family Storytelling Concert" saw three marvelous local authors and storytellers share funny and engaging stories of Oklahoma, other cultures, and other lands. Students who attended were able to see first hand in a dynamic new way how to communicate, teach, model, and even share faith by professionals who donated their time to SCU.

'Outstanding Library Service Award' for 2010 went to ABLE student Lemesa Phea for her able and quality work as a library assistant.

The University Library created a presence on Facebook and added many new friends and many familiar faces!

The SCU Archives in the UL continued to grow as biographical files on alums, faculty, administration and friends began to grow. Rare, fragile items have been scanned and placed on the SCU Archive blog for wider use and distribution of heritage.

The Self-study has established the Noel Brooks Room as the location of the accreditation self-study resource room. A file cabinet will be moved there and permanent self-study records housed there for future self-study and reference needs. Yearbooks have been created to visually record the events and activities at SCU since 2003 and the last self-study visit. The library director has been busy establishing the resource room in physical space and virtually with a page on the website.

Needs for 2010-2011

Those wishing to help the library and become "Friends" can help in these targeted ways -

Pray for the school and the library.

Underwrite the cost of a professional journal for one of the disciplines (Business, creative arts, behavorial sciences, language arts, humanities, religion, sports, education, etc.) ($60-300)

Underwrite the cost of archival boxes, files, and other preservation supplies. ($300-500)

Underwrite the cost of a reference resource in one of the disciplines ($50-1000)

Underwrite the cost of a year's subscription to an online database ($1000-$3000)

Underwrite the cost of a new and quality resource (book or DVD) ($25-100)

Volunteer to come in to index and identify people in old photos

Volunteer to collect and record oral histories, transcribe interviews, or collect written accounts of the school's over 60 year history: the music, the ministers, the memories ....

Volunteer to come one evening or afternoon a week to tutor in reading, grammar, science, math, or Bible.

Thanks to all for the good wishes, gestures of appreciation, and support for the campus library as the vital hub for student activity and purpose at SCU. I love the quote by historian Shelby Foote that a university is simply a library with other buildings around it. The campus library really IS the most important place on campus.

BETHANY – After 13 years of service as the Chairman of the Board of Regents at Southwestern Christian University, Dr. Dan Beller announced his retirement on May 14, 2010. “At my age, I knew it was time for me to retire and let our Vice-Chairman, David Burrows, assume the responsibilities”, said Beller. “I love this university immensely and will continue to support and assist in fundraising efforts moving forward. I know the university is in great hands with David Burrows as the Chairman and Dr. Ed Huckeby as president.”

A successful business man in the Enid, OK community, Burrows was Vice-Chairman of the Board of Regents prior to assuming the chairmanship and has served almost a decade as a board member. He is president of the Burrows-Muse Agency, Inc., an insurance and financial services agency for a Fortune 100 company, serving more than 2,800 households. Burrows’ agency has won Oklahoma Agency of the Year, Financial Partnership of the Year, and Client Growth Champion awards, and has qualified for the coveted Chairman’s Inner Circle, awarded to the top 1% of the company.

“It is my desire to see Southwestern live out the full expression of the founding fathers’ vision and continue to build a Christian liberal-arts university of excellence”, Burrows said. “In the words of William Carey, ‘we will attempt great things for God and expect great things from God’.” Dr. Ed Huckeby, president of Southwestern Christian University, said that “David is a distinguished graduate of SCU whose love and devotion for the institution is evident. I look forward to working with him and our other board members to accomplish the quality enhancement and growth objectives we have set for the future.”

With the Inaugration of Dr. Huckeby, SCU will unveil new ceremonial additions to the traditions of the institution used during formal events of 'pomp and circumstance' , such as Commencement.

New Ceremonial Traditions
University Mace
The Mace symbolizes the university’s clear lineage back to the customs of the middle ages and the birth of institutions of higher learning. It signifies a commitment to the finest standards, values, and traditions handed down through the centuries. The mace embodies authority, learning, scholarship, history, reputation, and values. The staff is oak and was custom made by Raybon Stewart for this ceremony. The four medallions bear the symbols of the parent denomination, the IPHC, and the school crest. The pure silver bands wrap the staff and are inscribed with the words of the university logo, “Scholarship”, “Spirit”, “Service”. Just below the capital of the staff is a silver band engraved with the date of the opening of the school in 1946.

Presidential Medallion
The medallion design depicts the official seal of the university. It is illustrated with a seal trisected to represent the heart of Southwestern Christian University as expressed in its motto: Scholarship, Spirit, Service. Engraved on the seal are the Biblical verses Deuteronomy 6:4, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one” and Ephesians 4: 11-12 , “It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors, and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” These connect to the roots and the mission of the institution over its more than sixty years as a place of preparation for a life of meaningful service to others.

Presidential Regalia
The heritage of academic regalia carries great meaning and significance as a symbol of personal achievement and dedication. The colors, hood styles, and various other accoutrements reflect the individual schools, disciplines, and traditions of the institution granting academic degrees. In the regalia of the President of an academic institution, has special significance as the regalia reflect the office and the institution. Putting aside their academic achievements, they become, in the finest and most noble sense, the servant of their institution. Southwestern Christian University’s guiding ethos of “Scholarship, Spirit, Service” are thus reflected in its principal leader on all formal occasions.

BETHANY - Southwestern Christian University of Bethany, Oklahoma has recently announced its planned entry into the Tulsa educational market in the fall of 2010. Accredited by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Southwestern continues to transition from its historical role as a bible college to that of a Christian liberal arts university. Although a primary mission of the institution continues to be that of educating students in a Christian environment, its curriculum is expanding to include an array of business, education, social sciences and arts offerings.

Through a cooperative agreement with Rhema Bible Training Center in Broken Arrow, SCU will be offering four undergraduate degree completion options and two graduate degree concentrations at the RBTC campus. Bachelor's degrees in Business Administration, Business Leadership, Human and Family Services and Biblical Leadership will be offered in a one-night-per-week format. The Master of Ministry degree with emphasis in either Life Coaching or Leadership will also be available. Depending on previous educational and life experience, students may be able to complete degrees in as few as 16 to 18 months.

According to Dr. Ed Huckeby, who began his tenure as President of SCU in January 2010, familiarity with the academic needs in the Tulsa area sparked an interest in providing Christian higher education opportunities to Rhema graduates, as well as other individuals in the Tulsa/Broken Arrow area who have an interest in faith-based higher education. Huckeby has been a well-known civic leader in the Tulsa area for the past decade, having served as the chief administrative officer at Northeastern State University, Broken Arrow.

Southwestern Christian University is a Christian liberal arts institution currently offering an Associate of Arts degree, eighteen Bachelors degree options, and a Master of Ministry degree with five areas of concentration.

HISTORIC BUNGALOW CABINS GET FACE LIFT

The cabins on the campus were built in the 1920's when the property was owned by St. Joseph's Orphanage. In that era, they expanded to also care for the elderly. Later, the cabins served as residence for nuns and guests. When the property was purchased in the 1970's by the IPHC as their new headquarters, they were rennovated to serve as missionary guest houses. Since that property has been owned by SCU, the spaces have been classes, offices, and overflow student housing. Today, these historic cabins are being rennovated and provide office space for faculty. On the left is a freshly painted cabin and on the right one awaiting its facelift. They will be lovely with some colorful planters and shrubs - won't they?
